"My favourite part of the day was when we had photos, I love Kirsty"
"Mummy when is the photo lady going to come back? Can we have more photos tomorrow?"
"That was so much fun. My favourite part was jumping on the bed and helping take photos of you"
While these might not be your standard reviews for a family photographer, they mean the world to me because they are all things that the littlest members of some of the families I have photographed have said about my sessions (thanks to the mums who were kind enough to let me know how their children felt about being photographed by me.)
Family photography sessions should be fun
It is vitally important to me that you not only love the photos I have taken of your family but also that you have had fun.
And I do try and make my sessions as full of fun as possible. It is one of the reasons I'll ask what you and your family like doing together.
Family Photography at Tower Bridge, London
I have had quite a few emails from parents who have never had photos done before asking how I work.
And I think this full-of-fun session at Tower Bridge over the weekend is a perfect example of what I do. I generally like to let the children lead the session. I want them to have fun, because if they are having fun, then so are their parents and that makes for wonderful family photos.
I met this lovely family of four near Tower Bridge on a fairly grey London day, and we had so much fun, just playing. The girls enjoyed running around the water fountains and exploring the gardens and interesting sculptures along the South Bank.
We talked about the things they liked doing, and while we were exploring, we danced and sang and ran and jumped and enjoyed living in the moment.
Genuine emotion, natural photographs
Children have a wonderful ability to really just live in the moment, no matter where they are. One of the joys of being a parent is that we get to do this with them. And if you think about it, we do, every day, unselfconsciously. We'll pull them into a hug and cover them in kisses (whether they like it or not), or start a tickle fight, or throw them in the air, or chase and catch them, or read them stories, or a build towers, or play shop or hide-and-seek ...
Whatever it might be that you like doing with your children, whether it is playing and having fun or just a quiet cuddle, you are totally immersed in the moment and the love and joy you find in your family shines through. This genuine emotion is what I aim to capture on camera. So that in years to come, when you look back on your photos, you'll remember just what you and your family are like, right now.

Caught in action
I love that this mum took a sneaky photo of me in action! When she emailed it to me, she said: "I find the whole photo thing quite stressful normally but today was so much fun! I love the picture I took of you taking photos - you look so alive and happy in your work!"
