Newborn Sessions with Kirsty Hamilton

Hello and thank you for considering me as your family photographer. I would love nothing better than to capture some precious memories of your family.

My name is Kirsty Hamilton. I’m a mum to two tiny people (Logan, 4 and Calla, 3) and I aim to do for your family the very same thing I do for mine, every single time I pick up my camera: and that is celebrate you, just as you are, right now.

As a former journalist, I really want to tell YOUR story. I feel it is important to capture the love and emotion and connection that binds you together as a unique family unit.

Read on to find out what a session with me looks like, why my families love them and what you’ll get out of booking me as your family photographer.

"YOU are here. YOU are necessary and important, and most of all, YOU are loved.
This is what I strive to say with every click of the shutter, because, to me, where we are and who we are, right now, is worth celebrating."

My Style

A good photograph might make you smile. But a great photograph? A great photograph will make you FEEL.

Whenever I pick up my camera, I'm aiming to create art that evokes emotion. That's my starting point.

Do I need you to look at the camera? Nope. I just want you to enjoy the moment, with your family, while I capture the magic.

What to expect

You and your family are unique and it is important to me that your individuality shines through in your images. Prior to the session, I ask you to fill in a questionnaire with some details about you, what you are like and the things you like to do together. I spend a good deal of time planning my sessions before I actually meet you.

I tend to do my newborn sessions in the morning as this is when everyone is most relaxed and the baby is less likely to be too tired and hungry. I ask you to block off two hours for your newborn session to ensure things are relaxed and stress-free.

I’m a lifestyle photographer, so I really want to capture lots of photos of you with the newest member of your family. I do not need your baby to be awake. If the baby is sleeping, I take photos of them asleep. If they are awake, we capture lots of lovely interactions with you and your tiny bundle. We take breaks for feeding and nappy changes and I make sure you are all feeling comfortable and relaxed!

Are there older siblings around? I try to make sure that toddlers and older children are having fun and I devote a lot of attention to them. I make sure to introduce myself to them and explain what I am going to do (this is where knowing about their favourite things from the questionnaire comes in very handy). We'll spend a relaxed 90 minutes to 2 hours having fun in your home while I capture precious memories for you.

How do we book?

The first thing you need to do is decide when you would like your session. Some people want to have it in the first 10-14 days when the baby is super tiny and still has that adorable newborn curl, other people prefer to have a session closer to the 3 or 4 week mark when things have settled down a bit, or between 6 and 8 weeks when your baby is more alert and has started smiling.

Once we have decided when you would like your photos, I make sure to keep some flexibility in my calendar for the four weeks around that time (as we obviously have no idea when the baby will arrive), and then just wait on your call once your little one is here to firm up the date and time! I do not take a deposit for newborn sessions, just the fee once you call me to settle the date.

What if the baby is crying or my children won’t pose for the camera?

Making sure that you and your baby are happy is my top priority. If your little one is upset and needs comforting, feeding or changing then that is what we will do.

If your toddler or child isn’t happy about having the camera around, I never force them to sit still and smile at me. Instead I’ll encourage them to play a game or engage in an activity they want to do. I promise, by the end of my session, you’ll have photos of them you’ll treasure for a lifetime.

I don’t want your children to be anything other than themselves infront of my camera. I don’t need them to sit still, say ‘cheese’ or ‘be good’, I have a 3-year-old and a 4-year-old who point-blank refuse to pose for me, I’ve become an expert in taking photos on the run and I have a lot of tricks to make sure that I get those lovely, connected family photos that you are after.

Toddler tantrums and momentary meltdowns routinely happen at almost every single session I have  (and sometimes that's just the dads!)

It’s my job to make sure you get the kinds of photos you see in my portfolio and I never want you to worry if your child or baby becomes upset. If it happens, we’ll take a break, distract them and make sure they are happy before continuing. I always recommend having a snack and a favourite toy on hand for older children for this very purpose.

When will we get our photos?

Every single photo you see in your final gallery has been custom-edited by me in my own style. I do both colour and black and white edits (where possible). It takes me around 15 to 20 hours to edit each gallery.

I work very hard to ensure I never have a backlog of editing to do. This means that I can start work on your gallery almost as soon as our session is finished and I aim to get your photo gallery to you within 10 days.

Your gallery is then live for two weeks so that you can choose your favourite photos. You will also have an opportunity to upgrade your package at this point if you wish to.

I order your fine art prints, framed photos and albums from a professional photography lab which utilises the highest quality inks and paper. Therefore your products can take up to four weeks to get to me once I have ordered them.

"The photoshoot was beyond my wildest expectations. Kirsty was brilliant with my raucous toddler, with endless patience & so many cute ways to get her engaged with the camera. This woman is a magician! You absolutely won’t be disappointed.” ~ Sue
