A Birthday Photoshoot in London: Ideas, Locations and How It Works
A few years ago I got a booking from a family visiting London from Belgium. Their daughter was turning 18, she'd chosen London over anywhere else in the world to celebrate, and she had a bucket list of things she wanted to see with her family.
Her parents booked me without telling her. She found out on the day.
We spent three hours crossing the city, from street art in Shoreditch to Big Ben, and somewhere in the middle of it I took her to the Barbican, because she was about to start studying architecture and I had a feeling she'd love the brutalist towers more than another photo by a bus.
She did.
That shoot is the reason I get asked about birthday photoshoots more than almost anything else, so here's everything I know about them.
What is a birthday photoshoot in London?
A birthday photoshoot is a portrait session built around a milestone, usually on location across London rather than in a studio, so the photos have the city in them as well as the person.
They tend to be one of two things. Either you live here and you want to mark a birthday properly, or you've come to London for the birthday and you want the trip remembered as well as the day.
Both work. The second is more common than people expect.
What kinds of birthdays do people book photoshoots for?
All of them, honestly, but a few come up again and again.
13ths, 16ths, 18ths and 21sts. Often booked by parents as a surprise, often tied to a first trip abroad or a big weekend. These are the ones where the whole family comes along, which I love.
The big round ones. 30, 40, 50, 60. Usually booked by women, usually for themselves, and usually after a fair bit of deliberating about whether they're allowed to. You are. My favourite of these was a 50th that started at 8am in St James's Park with a bottle of champagne, and you can read how that one went here if you'd like proof.
Quinceañeras. Fifteenth birthdays celebrated properly, ballgown and all. Rarer in London than they should be, and completely joyful when they happen. Here's what one looks like.
Birthday trips. Someone comes to London for the milestone and wants the whole thing photographed as they go. This is where the personal paparazzi sessions come into their own.
Where are the best places for a birthday photoshoot in London?
This is the question I get asked most, and the honest answer is that it depends on the person. But here are the spots I come back to, and why.
Shoreditch, for street art. East London has had a relaxed attitude to graffiti for decades, and the result is that work from some of the best street artists in the world is sitting on walls and hoardings around the station. The colour is extraordinary and it photographs beautifully. Good for teenagers and 21sts, and for anyone who doesn't want a postcard shoot.
The Barbican, for architecture. Concrete towers, walkways and courtyards, and one of the most distinctive backdrops in the city. You can photograph in the central courtyards, reachable from the Barbican Centre. It's not to everyone's taste, which is exactly why it's brilliant for the people who love it.
St Dunstan-in-the-East, for the secret-garden shot. A small public garden inside the ruins of a 13th-century church, tucked round the corner from Tower Bridge. Ivy growing through the windows. My favourite hidden spot in London and one almost nobody expects.
Tower Bridge, for the London one. Because sometimes you do want the photo that says London unmistakably, and this is it.
Big Ben and Westminster, for the finish. Big, dramatic, and a natural place to end a session, especially towards the end of the day when the light goes gold on the stonework.
Little Venice and Buckingham Palace, both of which come up often when families are choosing a route, and both of which reward an early start.
How do you choose a route?
Travel time, mostly. It's the unglamorous bit of planning that makes the difference between a shoot with variety and a shoot spent on the Tube.
I'll give you a shortlist based on what you've told me you want, then we build a route where each location leads sensibly to the next. The Belgian family started in Shoreditch and finished at Westminster, taking in the Barbican, Tower Bridge and St Dunstan on the way. Three hours, five locations, almost no dead time.
And I'll always ask what the birthday person actually likes before I suggest anywhere. The Barbican wasn't on their list. It was on mine, once I knew she was going to study architecture.
How long should a birthday photoshoot be?
For a single location and one main landmark, an hour is plenty.
If you want several locations and the sense of a day being followed, two hours is the sweet spot. That's the Personal Paparazzi session, and it's the one most birthday bookings end up choosing.
Longer than that is possible. I do still run three-hour shoots and they're great fun. But I'll be straight with you: two hours is genuinely enough for most people, and a longer session doesn't automatically mean better photos.
How much does a birthday photoshoot in London cost?
30-minute midweek mini, one location: £525
One hour, the most popular: £695 midweek, £795 at weekends
Two-hour Personal Paparazzi, multiple locations: £895 midweek, £995 at weekends
Extra half hours beyond two hours: £100 each
A £175 non-refundable deposit secures your date, and the balance is due a week before the shoot. Every session includes the planning, the location and outfit guidance, and your professionally edited digital images in a private online gallery.
When do we get the photos?
Your gallery lands within 10 to 14 days of the shoot, with all your edited images ready to download and share.
How do I book a birthday photoshoot in London?

Can you photograph a surprise birthday shoot? Yes, and it's one of my favourite things to do. Tell me it's a surprise when you book and we'll plan how you want the reveal to happen.
Is a birthday photoshoot just for the birthday person? Not at all. Plenty of these are family shoots with a birthday at the centre, which is usually how the 13ths, 16ths, 18ths and 21sts work. Bring whoever you want in the photos.
What if the birthday person hates having their photo taken? Very common, and not a problem. I don't pose people or ask anyone to look wistfully into the middle distance. We walk, we talk, we take the photos as we go, and most people forget to be self-conscious within about ten minutes.
Can we do outfit changes? On a two-hour session, yes. Somewhere with a café or a friendly loo built into the route, and it's easily done.
Do you photograph birthday parties? I photograph the person, not the party. If you want candid coverage of an event with a hundred guests, an event photographer is the better fit. If you want proper portraits of someone marking a milestone, that's me.
