What to wear for your professional London Photoshoot

Could your signature style be your secret superpower when it comes to having your photos taken?

As a London Photographer with over 9 years of experience and more than a thousand photoshoots under my belt, I know what looks good in a photoshoot.

So if you need some style inspiration for your next photoshoot

Sit back, relax and read on . .

Matchy-matchy? NO! NO! Co-ordinate those colours

Unless you are the Kardashians circa 1991, or have a double denim fetish, never wear matching outfits. White shirts and blue jeans might sound like a safe option, but it makes you indistinguishable from one another.

And I’m all about photos that OOZE love laughter and are full of individuality and personality.

Co-ordinating colours is always best. If pastels are your thing, then take some inspiration from the image at the top. This family worked around a blue and pink theme, with the girls in contrasting lightly-patterned dresses in the same style, and their mum and dad in co-ordinated block colours.

The trio above wore their best cheeky grins for our photoshoot, perfectly complimented by outfits in their favourite colours. The boys’ shirts co-ordinating beautifully with the light pastel lines on their older sister’s dress.

Make sure that YOU feel fabulous when choosing outfits for your family photoshoot

I always suggest that the starting point for putting together your photoshoot outfits, should be you. So if something new is going to get you excited then you cal always go on a shopping spree and pick out a signature piece (like the fabulous dress, the gorgeous mum above picked out specially for her 10-year wedding anniversary photoshoot).

Or simply start with your favourite pair of jeans/dress/skirt or top. You know - that piece of clothing that ALWAYS makes you feel fabulous!

If you have booked a family photoshoot, once you have your outfit picked out, you can co-ordinate the rest of the family around you. In this case the boys were in lovely light block colours and the little girl in a dress that co-ordinated beautifully with her mum.

The result?! A whole gallery of gorgeous images taken in the heart of Mayfair to celebrate a whole decade of their lives together!

Do you love bright colours? Don’t be afraid to wear the rainbow to your family photoshoot!

Do you adore bright colours? Bring out that bold and beautiful personality you have and WEAR it to your photoshoot!

Bright colours, can work out beautifully in any location, whether you are being photographed against a wall of late Autumn leaves (below), or dancing with your mum for a family photoshoot in Notting Hill (above).

Dress for the season when choosing your family photoshoot outfits

Thinking about any seasonal blooms that might be in the background of your photoshoot, can really help you decide what to wear.

For a Spring shoot amidst the blossom, this lovely lot below were pretty perfect in pink.

Whereas the neutral beige and brown palette for the family above was a brilliant choice for the family against a background of brilliant reds and oranges that we were treated to in late Autumn last year.

Dress for your location when choosing outfits for your family photoshoot

Whether you are going for an urban feel with a London city photoshoot, or planning on playing with your kids in your local park, or even relaxing with the people you love the most at home, think about how your outfit choices will blend with your environment.

If you are in a park, then a suit and tie and very formal clothes probably won’t blend as beautifully with your environment as your favourite jeans or seasonal dress.

I have no clue where to start! How do I decide what to wear to our photoshoot?

If you aren’t sure about what to wear, then I’m on hand to help you make your signature style your photoshoot super power!

I send out a detailed style guide to all of my families, so they have lots of inspiration when they are deciding what to wear to their session with me.

And after years in the business, I have developed an eye for what will work well. So I'm always happy to help my families choose outfits, if they need me to, before we actually meet up.

This usually involves you laying out your options and sending me some Whatsapp snaps, or trying on some outfits, so I can see exactly what is working for you! It’s almost like going shopping with your best friend (remember when we used to do that?!)

How the right clothes can boost your confidence for a family photoshoot

Wearing something you feel great in doesn’t just make for lovely photos you can proudly share with friends. It also makes you feel more confident - and that really shows in your final images.

And I firmly believe that no matter how we feel about how we look, we ALL need to be in photos with our family. These are - after all - the memories of us that our children are going to carry with them through the years.

So although I give lots of style advice for my shoots, I also make sure to direct each and every one of my clients so they LOOK as fabulous as they feel.
