Booking a birthday photoshoot in London

B’s enquiry landed in my inbox and I loved her immediately.

She was turning 50 at the end of May. She was travelling to London for work and to see a friend. And she'd seen champagne-pop reels on TikTok and thought: that. I want THAT. Something fun and natural, to post on the big day itself. No major landmarks needed — just London.

After she booked, she opened up a bit more. She wasn't exactly thrilled about turning 50 (are any of us in favour of getting older?) She was in what she jokingly called a rebellious phase — questioning everything, wanting to just live and have fun.

I mean. Could she BE more my kind of person?

And underneath the wobble, I could hear what she was really asking for: a reason to celebrate. So that's exactly what we built.

What is a champagne-pop photoshoot?

Pretty much what it sounds like — and honestly one of the most joyful things you can do with a morning in London.

We find a beautiful spot (early light through the trees, ideally backlit so the spray catches the sun), you pop a bottle of champagne, and I capture the whole glorious mess — stills and reel footage. No posing. No "now look wistfully into the distance." Just you, mid-laugh, covered in fizz.

Now, I'm not entirely sure you're allowed to be throwing champagne around a royal park at 8 o'clock in the morning. Or at any time of day, frankly. But we decided we were going to do it.

And so we did.

What actually happens on the day?

We met at 8am in St James's Park, while London was still soft and golden and half-asleep. B arrived with her friend, who had procured some genuinely lovely French champagne (this friend understood the assignment).

That's when B delivered her "utterly petrified" line — within the first five minutes, which is bang on schedule. Almost everyone says some version of it. I promise you, the nerves are part of the process.

Ten minutes later? She was mid-champagne-spray, laughing so hard we had to pause.

From there the shoot just… unfolded. We giggled through the whole thing. We built an entire mini story — drunken glamorous princess, if you're asking — with B drinking the champagne (I was working the rest of the day, or believe me, I'd have joined in). No posing, no pretending. Just B, entirely herself, her personality in every single frame.

It was genuinely one of the most fun hours of my life. By the end, we were firm friends.

Do I need to be confident in front of the camera?

No. Truly, gloriously, no.

After 9 years and more than 1,000 shoots, I can tell you the people who arrive saying "I'm awkward", "I never know what to do with my hands" and "I'm terrified" go on to have some of the best galleries I've ever delivered.

Because I'm not looking for perfection. I'm looking for connection. Laughter. Movement. The in-between moments — fixing your hair, sipping champagne, dancing badly in a park.

THAT'S the good stuff. And you can't get it wrong, because there's no wrong.

How did she feel about her birthday photoshoot?

Here's my favourite part of this whole story.

Before I'd even said goodbye — before she'd seen a single photo — B booked another shoot.

Not because of the gallery. Because of how the morning felt.

(She did then love the photos, for the record. She's used them absolutely everywhere, and made her own TikTok reels with them too.) And her next shoot is already in the diary: this summer, with her son. Memories with the people she loves most.

That's the bit that gets me. A shoot that started as "how can I possibly be 50?" ended as "book me in again — and bring my boy next time."

London's parks are wonderful, especially early in the morning — soft golden light, quiet paths, and room to be as loud and celebratory as you like. B's shoot was in St James's Park at 8am and we practically had it to ourselves. And you don't need a famous landmark for the photos to feel like London — B specifically didn't want one, and her gallery is pure London anyway.
