Notes from a Wandsworth Family Photographer: A Sunset Shoot on the Common (and One Very Memorable Splash)

Nine years of photographing family chaos, and this might be my favourite story.

Back in my second year of business — I was photographing a family enjoying every minute of the beautiful light and lovely connection that was unfolding infront of my camera.

I was quietly convinced I knew exactly what a family shoot was all about. That conviction was about to receive a serious reality check.

Two seconds after I took my favourite photo of the evening, the littlest member of the family decided it would be hilarious to push her big brother straight into the pond.

Reader, she was right. It was. (Once we'd established he was completely fine.)

I'm Kirsty — a natural, unposed family photographer based in London, and Wandsworth Common is one of my favourite places in the city to photograph families. After nine years and well over a thousand shoots, this golden-hour session on the Common might just be one of my favourites of all. Not despite the chaos. Because of it.

Wandsworth Common is one of the loveliest green spaces in South West London — a big, generous park in the heart of the borough, all open fields, mature trees, and (my personal favourite) a cluster of beautiful ponds.

For a natural family photoshoot, it has everything I look for. There are fields to run across, trees for shade and dappled light, and logs to climb — which, if you have small children, are worth their weight in gold for keeping little hands busy. And then there are the ponds.

The ponds are where I take almost every family at sunset. The tree cover around them is gorgeous, the backgrounds are some of the prettiest in the park, and the textures photograph beautifully — the long grasses that grow at the water's edge, the old brick bridge, the soft evening light on the water. There are ducks and swans pottering about too, which small children adore (and which make for brilliant, unposed "look at that!" moments). If you only shoot in one spot on the Common, make it the ponds.

When is the best time of day for photos on Wandsworth Common?

Late afternoon, heading into sunset. Every single time.

That last hour or so before the sun dips — golden hour — gives you the warm, soft, flattering light that makes everything look a little bit magic. On the Common, it filters through the trees around the ponds and turns the whole scene gold. If you can be flexible on timing, an early-evening slot is the one I'll always steer a family towards here.

What's the best time of year for a Wandsworth Common photoshoot?

Honestly? It's beautiful all year round — and I've photographed families here in every season.

This particular shoot was late spring, right about this time of year, when the Common is at its lushest: thick green leaves, full leafy bushes, everything soft and alive. Autumn is spectacular, with all those rich, golden colours. And there's a lovely, pared-back simplicity to a winter session here too — I've done plenty, and bare branches and low light have a quiet beauty all of their own. So please don't talk yourself out of booking just because it isn't peak summer. There's no wrong season on Wandsworth Common.

What if my kids won't sit still — or flatly refuse to "behave"?

Here's the honest truth, and the whole reason I do this job the way I do: I never ask children to perform.

I won't line your family up and ask everyone to "say cheese". That's the fast track to the stiff, slightly pained photo you're probably dreading. Instead, I let your shoot be what it actually is — your family, being your family. We wander. We play. The kids climb the logs, chase the ducks, wind each other up. And somewhere in all that, they forget I'm even there. That's when the real photographs happen.

Which brings me back to the pond.

We were midway through this session — I'd already caught dozens of lovely, real moments — when we wandered out by the water and the youngest spotted her chance. One gentle shove later, her big brother was sitting in the (very shallow) pond among the reeds, soaked through and entirely unharmed. Dad was in after him before I'd even lowered my camera. The little girl thought it was the single funniest thing she had ever done in her life. And the parents — bless them — laughed too. Their first words to me? "Please tell me you got that on camera."

I didn't. I'd already put my camera down to help. Because people always come before pictures.

Even nine years and a thousand-plus shoots in, children still find new ways to surprise me — and I wouldn't have it any other way. So if you've ever worried your kids are "too much" for a photoshoot, please hear this: the mess, the wriggling, the daft chaos? That isn't the thing that ruins family photos. It's the thing that makes them.

What should we wear for a family photoshoot?

Keep it simple and keep it comfortable. Soft, coordinating colours photograph far better than everyone matching in identical outfits, and natural fabrics and textures always look lovely against the greens and golds of the Common. Wear things you can genuinely move, sit and climb in — and shoes that'll cope with grass and the odd muddy patch down by the pond. How long is a family photoshoot, and what's included?

Most families book a one-hour session, which gives us plenty of time to relax, wander between a few spots, and let the children warm up at their own pace. Beforehand, we'll have a chat about what you're hoping for, and I'll send tailored location and outfit suggestions. Golden-hour slots are available and very popular.

Afterwards, you'll receive a gallery of beautifully edited, natural digital images to download, keep and share. These sessions are digital-only — so every image is yours to print and use however you like.
