There’s something very special about photographing families visiting London for the first time.
Maybe it’s the excitement of finally seeing places they’ve dreamed about for years. Maybe it’s the jet lag mixed with adrenaline and slightly chaotic sightseeing schedules. Or maybe it’s because family vacations have this funny way of becoming part adventure, part emotional documentary.
This particular London vacation photoshoot around Tower Bridge had all of the above — plus two wonderful mums, two hilarious pre-teen boys, dramatic London skies, and one accidentally-slammed finger that nearly derailed the entire morning before we’d even begun.
Thankfully, London has a habit of rewarding flexibility.
And honestly? Some of my favourite family photographs happen after the “perfect plan” falls apart a little.
A Tower Bridge Family Photoshoot That Didn’t Start Perfectly (And Why That Was Completely Fine)
This lovely family had travelled from the USA and planned their morning around visiting the Tower of London — which, logistically, is actually one of my favourite ways to structure a London family photoshoot.
The area around Tower Bridge gives you so much variety within walking distance: iconic skyline views, quieter cobbled corners, riverside paths, historic architecture, hidden gardens, colourful dock areas… and yes, the all-important red telephone box photos that children insist are necessary “proof” they really visited London.
(Completely fair, honestly.)
But when we first met, things felt a little overwhelming for everyone.
The youngest son had accidentally shut his finger in a door shortly before arriving, so understandably, he was upset and struggling to settle. The family arrived slightly late, flustered, worried about him, and suddenly faced with an extremely busy Tower Bridge packed with tourists.
The pressure to immediately “perform” for photos in a crowded space can feel like a lot — especially for children.
So instead of diving straight into posed photographs beside Tower Bridge, I gently suggested we take a tiny detour first.
Just four minutes away sits one of my absolute favourite hidden gems in central London.

A Peaceful Hidden Garden Beside Tower Bridge
If you’ve never visited St Dunstan in the East before, it feels a little like wandering into a secret garden hidden inside a fairytale ruin.
Tucked quietly between the city streets near Tower Hill, the remains of the old church are wrapped in climbing greenery, stone arches, soft light, and pockets of calm that somehow make central London disappear for a moment.
And that calm changed the entire energy of the shoot.
Instead of cameras immediately pointed at them in a crowded tourist hotspot, the family could simply breathe for a minute.
The boys chatted away. The mums relaxed. Nobody felt rushed anymore.
I spent time chatting with the youngest son about their trip — what he’d liked so far, whether London food had lived up to expectations, which landmarks felt coolest in real life. Slowly, his attention shifted away from his sore finger and onto telling me about the adventure they were having together.
That little bit of connection matters so much during family photography sessions.
Children don’t need perfection. They need safety, warmth, patience, and space to trust you.
And once that trust appeared, everything softened naturally.
The Magic of Letting Kids Settle Into the Experience

One son dramatically explaining exactly how he’d tell friends back home about London.
The younger brother slowly forgetting he’d been upset at all.
By the end of our time in St Dunstan in the East, the youngest boy and I were already joking together like old friends — which his mums later mentioned meant a huge amount to them.
