Spread a little love: A London Portrait Photographer’s Valentine’s Day Shoot in Shoreditch

On Valentine’s Day, while most of London was wrapped up in roses, dinner reservations and heart-shaped everything, this London Portrait Photographer was standing in the biting cold sunshine of Shoreditch with a woman adorned in scarlet, laughing our heads off between shots.

Because this wasn’t a couples shoot.

This was a “I have a significant birthday coming up” celebration.

This was a declaration of independence.

This was GiGi.

A Valentine’s Day Portrait Shoot in Shoreditch

At the start of the year, I launched a celebratory portrait project exploring the themes of womanhood and identity, through the clothes we choose (and love) to wear, and the places we inhabit.

Gigi (who had previously done a photography workshop with me) responded immediately. She has a significant birthday coming up and she decided to do something bold, joyful, and completely on her own terms.

She booked her portrait session.

On Valentine’s Day.

As a proudly single woman who has absolutely no plans to ever get married.

Honestly? It was iconic.

As a London Portrait Photographer, I get to photograph people at all stages of their lives, but there is something incredibly powerful about photographing a woman who is this comfortable in her own skin.

No apologies. No shrinking. No “shoulds”. Just a full-colour, fully expressed human being standing in front of a graffiti wall like she owns it.

Which, in a way, she does.

Why Shoreditch Was the Perfect Backdrop for a London Portrait Photographer

GiGi loves bold colour. She loves street art. She loves places with personality and history.

And with her French-Hungarian heritage and childhood in South Africa, London’s rich immigrant story and creative pulse felt like a natural fit. Nowhere captures that quite like Shoreditch and Brick Lane.

The layers of paint. The layers of culture. The layers of stories.

It felt like the perfect place to photograph this incredible woman.

She told me during the shoot:

“I participate in various charities each year to try and make a difference. There is so much need out there. I find we ground ourselves when we participate in charities. We forget how blessed we are.”

And you can feel that energy when you’re around her. The kind of person who talks to strangers. Who compliments people in the street. Who radiates warmth.

Photographing her wasn’t about posing. It was about keeping up.

Celebrating being single, and completely content with a London Portrait Photoshoot

There was something beautifully defiant about doing this shoot on Valentine’s Day.

A quiet, joyful rebellion against the idea that this day is only for couples.

GiGi is unashamedly single. Not “still single”. Not “looking for someone”. Just single. By choice. By design. By happiness.

She told me that her father always taught her she didn’t need a man to complete her, that she was complete all on her own (what a legend!)

And celebrating her upcoming birthday with a portrait session felt like the most perfect way to honour that.

Because this is exactly what my In Her Place project is about: celebrating women as they are, in the clothes they love, in the spaces that feel like home to them.
