From 0: I'm Growing a Brand-New Instagram From Zero, In Public
Today I'm doing something properly terrifying. On purpose.
I'm launching a brand-new Instagram account, @kirstyhamiltonmentors, with zero followers and no head start. And I'm going to grow it completely in public, using only the AI-powered marketing system I teach in my photography business courses.
Every follower, every enquiry, every wobble, with everyone watching.
If it flies, you'll see exactly how. And if I flop... well. You'll see that too.
Hang on. Courses? Since when do you teach?
A little backstory, because if you found this blog through your photos (hello, lovely clients!) this might be news to you.
Nine years ago I swapped a newsroom career for a camera and stumbled into this business with absolutely no idea how to run one. No clue what to charge. No website. Not the faintest idea how to find clients. I figured it out the slow way, with some properly expensive mistakes along the way, and it grew into a business that thrives (on a good day), that I question (on my worst days), and that I love on ALL the days. More than 1,000 shoots later, here we are.
And somewhere in those nine years, other photographers started asking me HOW. How do you get found on Google? How do you price a shoot? How do you keep up with Instagram without losing your mind?
So this year I started building the answer: courses teaching photographers the business side of photography, under a name that says exactly what it took to get here. The Leap. Everything I wish someone had told me at the start.
So what exactly is the From 0 test?
I have one rule for teaching: I only teach what I've already proven works.
Everything I sell is something I've tested in my own business, with my own money on the line. For the past seven months that's included an AI-powered content marketing system, run through an SEO crisis and out the other side into a fully booked summer.
NOT by going viral. I've NEVER gone viral. Just a simple system, run consistently, by one busy photographer.
But there's a difference between "this worked for my established business" and "watch this work from absolutely nothing." So From 0 is the proper test. A brand-new account. Zero followers. No borrowed audience, no head start, run entirely on the blueprint I teach. In public, in real time, warts and all.
The first courses are already live, and the full programme lands in January 2027, my ten-year business anniversary. Which is exactly why I have to prove this now.
Why not just do this on your photography account?
Believe me, it would be SO much easier. But I can't, for one very good reason: education content puts my real (lovely) photography clients off. I've tested it. It does.
You're here for beautiful photos of your family in golden London light, not a lesson on content strategy. So the two live apart. The photography account stays exactly what it's always been, and the new adventure gets its own home.
(And honestly? Starting from zero makes it a better test. If the system only works with nine years of audience behind it, it's not much of a system.)
What happens if you flop?
Then you'll watch me flop! Genuinely. That's the deal.
There will be no guru promises over there. No overnight success (no overnight anything). Going viral isn't the plan, because in my experience it's not useful, not needed, and near-impossible in this niche anyway. Just a passionate working photographer, who loves her job, showing you how she does it, one post at a time.
The first post is up now, and it ends with a vote: fly, or flop?Cast yours in the comments. Cheer me on, or come purely for the popcorn. All welcome.
Does anything change for photography clients?
NOTHING. Truly.
The shoots, this blog, the newsletter (your photos, London's best photo spots, the occasional appearance from my grumpy cat)... all of it stays exactly as it is. London families, couples, proposals and visitors will always be the heart of this business. The teaching side simply lives at The Leap, on its own account, for a completely different crowd.
How do I follow along?
One tap: follow @kirstyhamiltonmentors on Instagram. That's where the whole test unfolds.
And if you know a photographer who's brilliant behind the camera and drowning in everything else? Send them this post. The new account was built for exactly them.
